airport (about an hour’s drive from Kilimanjaro), Gill took a light aircraft transfer to Seronera
airstrip, followed by a fifty-minute scenic drive through the bush to reach the lodge, so it is quite a journey, but Gill says that it usually means that you're heading somewhere very special... and she was right! When she was shown to her suite at Four Seasons Safari Lodge, she was blown away by the incredible views over the spectacular Serengeti plains that
stretch as far as the eye can see − a wonderful feature of all the rooms, suites and villas.
There is no need to forego any luxuries here, as there is a lovely little spa where Gill enjoyed a fantastic massage that soon made her feel relaxed after her long journey. Gill says that the wildlife is abundant all year round in the Serengeti which is also world-renowned for the
spectacular annual migration of wildebeest and zebra in search of
the best grazing land, often known as ‘the greatest show on Earth’. The lodge offers a an
impressive range of activities including half and full day safaris (there are no night-time game-drives as vehicles have to be out of the park by sunset)
that offer brilliant opportunities to spot the ‘big five’ (lions, leopards, elephants, buffaloes and
Gill enjoyed game-viewing from
the comfort of the balcony of her suite too and says that there are plenty of other ways to experience this
wonderful wilderness, from simple pleasures
including relaxing beside the infinity pool − where elephants often drink at the watering hole
beyond − to a unique dinner at the boma restaurant
accompanied by Masai tribal dancing. A visit to the
discovery centre is an absolute must to find out
fascinating facts about African culture and history;
you can even meet the local Masai people and learn about programmes designed to
help local schools or wildlife. Guest speakers sometimes visit the lodge too, so you
might have the opportunity to listen to a lecture about the region’s flora and fauna.
you want to do an excursion, there is an exciting hot-air balloon safari that takes off
early in the morning so you can catch the sunrise and when you wish to wind down in
the evenings, begin with sundowners at the bar, but do make sure you have your
camera ready to snap away at the beautiful sunset. Before retiring to your bed, you
must take a seat in the outdoor lounge, look up, and simply admire the beauty of the
stars in the clearest of night skies − the scene simply took my breath away.
Gill also suggests combining your luxury stay in the Serengeti with a couple of nights exploring the
beautiful Ngorongoro Crater conservation area, also in Tanzania – where black rhinos, elephants, big cats and
flamingos are amongst its residents.
