The Bay of Islands can be accessed by a short flight or several-hour drive from Auckland and is where the Maoris and Europeans first made contact when Cook anchored here in 1776; but it was the Whalers and Missionaries that came after him in the following decades who provided the historic backdrop that, twinned with its jaw-dropping scenery, makes the area such a magnet today. Its 144 islands offer a wealth of natural beauty including secluded bays and beaches, which offer opportunities to enjoy the outdoors gently with long walks, cycling, a few rounds of golf, snorkelling, trekking by horse, sailing and fishing. There is also culture and history to discover with the township of Russell being a great place to start as buildings include the Catholic Mission ‘Pompallier’ and Christ Church, which still bears the bullet marks of the Maori Wars. It’s a wonderful place to unwind and rediscover yourself and maybe find a new sense of adventure.
