For a truly unique experience, flushed with historical significance, look no further than Belmond Hotel Monasterio in historic Cuzco. Sympathetically adapted from a 16th century monastery, this splendid hotel is bursting at the seams with character and charm. Built in 1595, the building became a base for Catholic priests and, amazingly, the original artwork from this period still adorns its walls. Heavy wooden doors and courtyard gardens, bordered by dozens of stone archways, make for an unusual exterior, while guest rooms and suites are cosy and intimate, decorated in traditional Spanish Colonial style and look out onto the central courtyard or the city. The hotel boasts two restaurants, a bar and a therapy suite for massages and can organise a number of exciting activities, including cookery classes, art tours, treasure hunts for little ones, sightseeing tours of Cuzco and Pisco-tasting with the barman. Belmond Hotel Monasterio is located at an altitude of eleven thousand feet, so oxygen replenishment is a welcome in-room luxury for much of the accommodation, while the large roaring fireplace in the lobby accentuates the hotel’s homely appeal.

City Life

Cuzco, located in the southern highlands of Peru and a heady 3,350 metres above sea level, is a richly historic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Throughout its deeply fascinating past, Cuzco has been home to Incan civilisations and invading Spanish conquerors, both of which have left their mark. From ancient temples once lined with solid gold walls, to awesome cathedrals, Cuzco is flushed with historic significance. Marvel at the colonial works of art and detailed wood carvings dotted across the city squares and walk through charming cobbled alleyways, admiring impressive Spanish mansions along the way. From here, you can also start your adventure to Machu Picchu, criss-crossing your way through Incan ruins on the world-famous Inca Trail.

In Addition

Belmond Hotel Monasterio provides the perfect base from which to embark on the acclaimed Inca Trail. The routes, many of which are of original Incan construction, integrate a network of three overlapping pathways. You will traverse through various Peruvian terrains, including alpine forest and mountainous, cloud-covered landscapes before arriving at magnificent Machu Picchu. En route, the presence of ancient civilisations, such as Inca ruins, stone stairways, tunnels and rocky pathways, can all be observed. However, due to concerns regarding erosion, the number of tourists allowed to trek the route has been limited by the Peruvian government (only five-hundred people are permitted daily, so early booking is necessary).

Weddings & Honeymoons

For guests who wish to get married while staying at Belmond Hotel Monasterio, it is possible to enjoy an intimate ceremony in the candlelit, 500-year-old hotel chapel or in the peaceful courtyard, surrounded by cloisters and landscaped gardens. Packages are available that include flowers, music from a voilinist and flute player, candles, a Champagne and canapes toast for ten people, a wedding cake and Junior Suite accommodation for the bride and groom.

Cuzco is a very romantic place in which to honeymoon, replete with cobbled streets, narrow alleyways and centuries-old architecture. Honeymooners will enjoy shopping in the local boutiques, sightseeing and enjoying horse-riding excursions in Sacred Valley, followed by massage treatments and romantic candlelit dinners back at the hotel.
