Remotely located in the heart of Peru's verdant Sacred Valley of The Incas, Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado is perfect for relaxation and nestles peacefully between a lush mountain backdrop and the Urubamba River. It also offers the ideal base for exploration of the valley and for visiting the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, which can be found less than two hours away by train. The hotel's sympathetically designed exterior, constructed of stone and timber, brings to mind a traditional Andean village and this architectural theme continues in the interior spaces, which feature whitewashed walls, timber floors, traditional stonework and tastefully styled smatterings of brightly coloured Andean soft furnishings and artefacts. Spacious guest rooms, suites and the two villas boast a minimal, yet traditional design, with features such as heated floors in the marble bathrooms, to vivid splashes of colour covering the cushions and dressing the beds, and to help induce a peaceful ambience in the accommodation, televisions are deliberately lacking, though the modern conveniences of preloaded iPods and iPod docks, along with wi-fi internet access throughout the resort, are available to guests, if they wish. The hotel's riverside gardens are splendid and provide a tranquil place for guests to enjoy the surrounding landscape, while an alternative location to relax by is the lovely heated swimming pool, with attentive pool butlers on hand to proffer cooling drinks, towels and a menu of light dishes. Leisure pursuits and facilities include a spa, yoga and horse-riding, along with a selection of activities suitable for keeping younger guests entertained, and for those who aspire to enjoy a more spiritual lifestyle, mystic ceremonies, conducted by an Andean Shaman, profess to rejuvenate the spirit and bring guests closer to nature.

In Addition

Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado enjoys a peaceful location in a spectacular rural setting, yet is a superb base from which to visit the nearby villages of Pisac, which boasts a popular and colourful market frequented by locals and tourists alike, the ruins of an ancient hilltop citadel and an impressive arrangement of agricultural terraces; Ollantaytambo, one of the oldest continually occupied settlements in the entire Americas, and cultural sites, most notably the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Machu Picchu, which can be found to the northern end of the Sacred Valley and can be reached in under two hours by train.

Apart from the cultural attractions in and around the valley, the area offers the perfect playground for adventure. River rafting down the rapids of the Urubamba River might appeal, supplemented by a fortifying al fresco picnic lunch afterwards, or how about enjoying a horse-riding excursion atop a Peruvian Paso, which reputedly offer the smoothest ride of all the world's horses? The hotel recommends three circuits, which are perfect for two people and allow for exploration of the local neighbourhood and surrounding countryside, including the town of Maras, famous for its striking, terraced salt evaporation ponds, which are located just a kilometre from town. Mountain-bikes are available for hire from the hotel and provide an alternative mode of transport from which to enjoy the splendid scenery.
