Overview+

The island's jagged mountainous heart is surrounded by a rugged shore and the two main centres are Capri Town and Anacapri, the narrow streets of both easily explored on foot.

Capri

A funicular railway links the harbour of Marina Grande to Capri Town, saving a steep walk uphill. At the heart of the town you’ll find the small, but bustling Piazza Umberto, otherwise known as the Piazzetta. This square was once a marketplace and is now a very fashionable spot indeed with pavement bars and cafes where you can sit with a drink, day or night, and watch the world go by. It gets particularly busy in July and August, and do keep your eyes peeled for celebrities here. When it comes to designer shops, head for the streets of Corso Vittorio Emanuele and Via Camerelle where you’ll find stores including Alberta Ferretti, Versace and Roberto Cavalli. Hand-made sandals and glittering jewellery are popular purchases for those wishing to treat themselves. For gifts, try the traditional perfumeries that make lovely fragrances from local herbs and flowers, using techniques first used on Capri by Carthusian monks. Visitors can also climb the steps to the town’s pretty church, Chiesa di Santo Stefano.

Anacapri
Anacapri sits some five-hundred metres above sea level at the base of the majestic Monte Cappello and looks down over its busier counterpart, Capri Town. Anacapri is less touristy, more tranquil and offers a feel of old Capri. Pretty gardens are interspersed with quiet, winding streets and there are fewer designer shops than Capri Town; in fact Anacapri is a lovely place to pick up local crafts, foods and wines. Our featured hotel, Capri Palace Hotel & Spa, is located amidst this picturesque scene and with its incredible spa and wellness facility it’s an excellent place to rejuvenate. Anacapri is perfect for those more interested in walks and leisurely days than shopping and high-octane glamour.

Highlights+

Blue Grotto
Take the boat excursion to Capri's famous Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto), a striking sea cave known since Roman times that has inspired many painters and writers. Small rowing boats take you through the entrance of the grotto that is about one metre high and two metres wide, along a dark tunnel and into the heart of the grotto where the water is an azure blue and a natural lighting effect makes shadows appear as a silver colour. It is best to visit on a sunny day, preferably during the late morning until early afternoon when the light is at its best and the water its most blue.

Villa San Michele
Villa San Michele in Anacapri became a tourist attraction when its owner, Dr. Axel Munthe’s published the bestseller, ‘The Story of San Michele’ in 1929. The residence and its gardens are in effect a museum dedicated to the life and thoughts of the owner. It’s certainly a place where you can spend time enjoying looking at the beautiful objects that adorn the site from the marble statues in the grounds to the ceramics and textiles indoors.

Food & Drink
Capri has plenty of elegant restaurants, as well as many lively cafés. Local specialities include Insalata Caprese (a salad of mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and olive oil); Ravioli Caprese (acheese-filled pasta) and Torta Caprese (a delicious cake with chocolate and almonds). Don't forget to enjoy a tipple of the classic lemon-flavoured liqueur, Limoncello.

Adventure
There are plenty of walks that guide you through some of the island’s natural scenery and from Capri Town you can hike uphill towards the natural arch, Arco Naturale, before making a steep descent − shaded by the trees as you go − to the Grotta di Matermania, a cave with Roman walls and floors, before continuing to Punta Tragara to admire views down to the Faraglioni rocks. The walk from here, along a pretty bougainvillea-studded lane, back to the Piazzetta in Capri Town is one of the island’s most classic ‘passeggiata’. Keen walkers can also make the forty-five-minute walk from Capri’s Piazzetta to the ruins of Villa Jovis, Tiberius' main home on the island. Or, for something different take the twelve-minute chairlift ride from Piazza della Vittoria in Anacapri to the top of Monte Solaro where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the island and the Bay of Naples.
