City Life

Frenetic Beijing boasts a number of cultural and historic sites that it would be a shame to miss during your visit. Tiananmen Square is an enormous, beautiful open space, visited by foreign tourists and Beijing residents, alike. It remains the city's political centre, with balconies from where leaders address the people and speakers dotted all around in order for them to be heard. Visit at sunrise or sunset to see the raising or lowering of the Chinese flag. The Forbidden City, meanwhile, deserves a full-day excursion and is where the emperor stayed with his empress, concubines and guards, called Eunuchs. The emperor refused to leave for fear of assassination, his people were forbidden to leave and outsiders were forbidden to enter; hence the site's name. Nearby Beihai Park is the oldest existing Imperial garden in China, dating back from the 10th century Laio Dynasty, and provides a welcome, quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of the tourists visiting the Forbidden City. Lovers of horticulture and Chinese garden design will certainly be thrilled with the lakes, pavilions, trees and ornate Yinding Bridge - perfect for a stroll, boat tour across the lake or a picnic.

The 6437-kilometre-long Great Wall of China is approximately fifty-five kilometres from central Beijing and can be reached in about an hour. Snaking its way through the lush, hilly landscape, some sections have been restored, while others are in a precarious state of repair. Mutianyu can be reached by car in about 1 hour, 30 minutes and is the longest fully restored section of the wall, with unique fortresses and watchtowers typifying how the wall looked like when it was originally built. Once there, cable-cars can take you up to see it.

Back in Beijing, The Temple of Heaven is an ornate architectural masterpiece where the emperors once worshipped and worthy of a visit, while the hutongs can be visited on foot, by rickshaw or by bike. These mazes of narrow alleyways house original, single-storey courtyard residences and offer a glimpse into domestic life of the past.

For entertainment, do visit the bustling markets found in the city, perfect for souvenirs and examples of old arts and crafts artefacts (do be aware that some of the antiques are fake). Alternatively, take in a high-end performance from the Beijing Opera, one of the city's cultural treasures; an acrobatic show at Chaoyang Theatre or a kung fu show of martial arts blended with a fast-paced story. While in Beijing, foodies should enjoy a meal at the original Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant on Qianmen Street. Popular with VIPs, tourists and locals alike, it is one of the best places to enjoy delicious roast duck and is certainly the most famous for it.

Families are well-catered for at Four Seasons Hotel Beijing and, despite there being no children's club, the welcoming hotel has perfected providing parents and youngsters with a wealth of amenities to ensure they feel right at home. Included in this are babysitting services, children's menus in the restaurants and through in-room dining, mini-bathrobes, children's toiletries, essential items for babies - even down to baby baths and cots, which are available on request, along with books, games and colouring books to keep little ones occupied.

Head to the spa and children over the age of five years can look forward to spa treatments in the company of their parents and, when it's time for bed, little ones even have their own turndown service to make them feel extra-special.

While staying is such a culturally rich city as Beijing, it would be remiss not to make the most of the superb treasures that can be found in abundence here. The Concierge would be delighted to point families in the direction of a number of iconic sites, such as the Summer Palace and The Great Wall. Throughout the year, Beijing hosts a number of festivals that will appeal to old and young, alike - including those dedicated to kites, lanterns and dragonboats - while the winter brings ice-skating to the city's central lake.

Health & Fitness

Four Seasons Hotel Beijing boasts a spa (open from 10am until midnight), offering massages, therapies, rituals, facials and hydrotherapy. An integral element of the spa offering is its holistic services, given by Dr Lan, a specialist in Chinese medicine and one of the leading consultants in Beijing - the 'go to' man for cupping, acupressure and therapeutic massage, in fact. Additionally, there are specific men's treatments.

The 24-hour health club, meanwhile, boasts an indoor 20-metre-long swimming pool that allows guests to enjoy lap swimming, a sauna, steam room and whirlpool. A range of state-of-the-art cardio equipment and weights is also available, as are qualified instructors (on request).
