Seventeen years after opening, Singita Boulders Lodge has been given a contemporary make-over by Interior Designer, Boyd Ferguson, which was inspired by the colours, textures and other elements of nature of the surrounding boulder-strewn banks of the Sand River.
The effect for guests is one of engaging with nature from the moment they arrive. Areas have been opened up, lowered, and brought closer to the river, allowing full engagement with the magnificent setting beneath the Ebony and weeping Boer Bean trees. Throughout the lodge, a colour palette of charcoal, chalk, bone, rust, copper and ochre reflect the four elements of earth, fire, air and water and there is a sense that everything has been derived from the earth. Dramatic sculptural shapes, abstract art, and carefully curated collections of crystals, seed pods and bones echo the connection with the wild, while rustic furnishings include pieces fashioned from fossilised tree stumps, slabs of solid stone, artisanal wrought iron and leather. These touches are complemented by original contemporary paintings, sculptures and soft, sensual textures – a sheep-skin rug to step onto when you get out of bed, the feel of natural flax bed linen on your skin – add subtle layers of luxury. In fact, there is something exciting to see or touch at every turn.
The lodge provides a continuous connection with the prolific wildlife and birdlife for which the Sabi Sand is so well known either through glass walls or areas that are open to the elements such as the new outdoor dining pavilion that offers a spectacular vantage point above the Sand River. Its central fireplace and cascading water add delightful focal points, while sandblasted driftwood tables are positioned along the river bank to make the most of the views. There is also a new bar, Copper Bar, that’s the perfect place to enjoy a freshly pressed fruit juice, espresso or cocktail and have the opportunity to mingle with other guests.
When it comes to the accommodation, the twelve private suites, (two of which are exclusively designed for families), offer a harmonious blend of Africa meets high design, and the luxurious creature comforts and attention to detail, for which Singita Boulders Lodge has always been known, are all as evident as ever. The lodge is the perfect complement to safari days spent on game-drives or walks with Singita’s professional Guides and Trackers, photographing the birdlife of the Sabi Sand, swimming at the lodge’s pool or enjoying pursuits such as archery.
