Description

Hacienda Zuleta is a traditional, working farm that has been in the family of former President, Mr Galo Plaza Lasso, for over a century. Set in 4,000 acres of beautiful grounds that comprise pastureland and forests, edged by the Ecuadorian Andes, the location offers plenty of opportunities for unique, cultural and outdoor activities. Relaxing holidays here begin with a warm welcome from the family and superb Ecuadorian cuisine, created with ingredients including vegetables, fruits, bread and milk, produced on the farm, provide the perfect comfort food. Guests of this country house-style eco-lodge can explore interesting places on the estate including archaeological sites and an Ecuadorian cheese factory, with horse-riding and mountain-biking being popular ways to get around. Those who enjoy nature will love it here and it’s an excellent place for bird-watching. The hacienda also runs an Andean Condor rehabilitation project that is open for guests to visit. At least one evening here should be spent sipping a cup of warm tea outdoors in the fresh air, before retiring to your cosy guest room where you will no doubt drift straight to sleep.

Dining:+

The hotel's philosophy when it comes to dining is that guests order what they want to eat at whatever time. Almost every ingredient used in the Ecuadorian-inspired dishes served at the hacienda use produce from the estate. Vegetables and fruits come from the organic gardens, cream, milk, butter and cheese are produced at the dairy, bread is baked using flour from wheat harvested on the premises and trout is freshly caught. Many of the dishes derive from recipes that have been handed down generations and some are unique, offering you an authentic and memorable dining experience.

Leisure:+
Family

The hotel welcomes children and can arrange activities for children aged 6 to 12 years old, in advance, on request. Those under 6 years old must be accompanied by an adult. A babysitting service, operated by the hotel, is also available.

Health & Fitness

The hotel does not have a spa, gym or pool, however massages can be arranged on request. In addition, a host of activities, including cycling and walking, are available to help get the heart racing, if you desire.

In Addition

Farm Life
As a working farm, there are many unique activities to experience. Visit the dairy and watch the cows being milked, before taking a walk around the Ecuadorian cheese factory. There are also organic gardens where a wide variety of vegetables and fruits are grown for use in the dishes cooked at the hacienda. You can pick up lots of organic gardening tips whilst you’re there.

Bird-watching
The valleys of the Andes are an excellent place to observe wildlife, particularly the birdlife. Thanks to the Condor Huasi Project, unique habitats have been preserved and species including the endangered Andean Condor flourish. A typical day may include watching humming birds and visiting the Andean Condor rehabilitation area where Guides are available to take you on walking or cycling tours.

Learn About The Local Community
The Zuletan community is proud to actively preserve its culture and traditions. Learn more about them with a visit to the community restaurant or the traditional home of one of the local families. In addition, the embroidery workshop offers demonstrations by Zuletan women who produce decorative items, including tablecloths and curtains, to buy.

Archaeological Sites
Known locally as ‘the pyramids’, the grounds of the hacienda are home to one of the best preserved archaeological sites of the ancient Caranqui culture. It comprises over one-hundred small mounds of earth and five large, but short, pyramid structures.

Hiking and Trekking
The area around Hacienda Zuleta is perfect for walking and there are easy to follow trails around the grounds, or you can book a Guide to escort you.

Horse-riding
The estate is proud to be home to one of Ecuador’s most exclusive stables known for its Zuleteño breed of horse that are perfect for trail riding in the Andean countryside. Excursions are offered with a Guide and you can enjoy a picnic lunch along your route. If you are a keen horse-rider, three to ten day programmes are available.

Horse-drawn Carriage Rides
If you like the sound of discovering the estate in relative comfort, take a horse-drawn carriage ride and see some of the many places of interest.

Off The Property
Local excursions inlcude the Indian markets of Otavalo and Peguche, Artisan Markets including Cotacachi which is good for leather goods and San Antonio for wood crafts, and the middle of the world monument. You may also enjoy a scenic train journey passing snow-capped volcanoes and crater lakes.
