Introducing The British Airways Dreamliner

The girls had a very busy schedule in New York, choosing to visit all of the luxury hotels featured in the Elegant Resorts portfolio on the Friday so that they had Saturday to shop and sightsee. Pam’s memories of their whistle-stop hotel tour include the wonderful ambience of old-time glamour at Cafe Carlyle Cabaret Lounge at The Carlyle(apparently Woody Allen plays there every Monday night), being seen having afternoon tea at The Palm Court in The Plaza, A Fairmont Managed Hotel, and The Peninsula New York which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and guests staying in a suite have the fun option of having a Mini and driver for three hours.

After some lovely weather, our team woke the next day to a very wet, windy and cold New York City so decided to take the three-hour City Line Cruise around Manhattan Island. However they also decided to brave the weather and sit outside on the top deck! It was worth it because they got a good view of the Statue of Liberty, but they did get rather wet in the process so had to give in and take shelter inside the boat where they warmed up with a cup of hot chocolate and a hot dog! After disembarking they went their separate ways to seek out some New York shopping bargains, which they told each other all about when they met up later back at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park where they were staying. The Club Lounge was their regular meeting point for early evening cocktails, but on this occasion it had to be hot cups of latte to warm their bones! Sadly, it was (all too quickly) time to begin saying goodbye to New York and the group decided to spend their last evening dining at the wonderful speciality seafood restaurant at The Quin Hotel, before setting off for Newark Airport for their flight home.

Pam recommends flying in and out of Newark because it is less congested than JFK Airport, and as it was late evening our group sped through check-in. Though if you’re looking for last-minute gifts, Julie says there isn’t the biggest selection of duty-free shops, so the girls got comfy in the British Airways Club Lounge and enjoyed snacks and a couple of drinks before boarding the British Airways Dreamliner. There are three cabin classes on this aircraft – Economy, World Traveller Plus and Club World, which our team were fortunate enough to be seated in – and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their experience. You receive the same Club service, however instead of a 2-4-2 seat configuration found on other aircraft, the cabin on the Dreamliner is 2-3-2 so the middle seat (which faces backwards) has much more space around it. The windows are larger than other aircraft too and as Julie was in a window seat, she experimented with the six different settings you can set the view at – discovering that the darkest setting blocks out the sunrise, but cleverly you can still see the views. It seems the blue LED lighting around the windows had a calming effect, helping them to drift off to sleep better. If you’re not ready for a snooze, you can always enjoy the latest touch-screen entertainment system. Julie, Pam, Myra, Clare and Stephanie all agree that one of the best things about the Dreamliner is the purer air and they all benefitted from feeling quite refreshed after their flight – with less dehydration, swelling and no dry eyes. An excellent end to a very short, but sweet trip.
