Itinerary Description

Marrakech is a city of contradictions, bursting with magic and chaotic colours, it’s exhilarating, exotic and a just a little bit rough around the edges. Whilst here, explore Jemaa el Fna’s labyrinthine souks, brimming with carpets, jewellery and trinkets, or the Rahba Kedima Spice Square selling herbal remedies, cosmetics and a plethora of spices. At dusk, take a caliche (horse-drawn carriage) and re-visit the Jemaa el Fna square which magically transforms itself into a theatrical stage where snake charmers, belly dancers and fortune tellers, amongst the many other entertainers, will amuse, bemuse and delight. After your city experience, discover a change of scenery and a change of pace as you head into the Atlas Mountains where you’ll find peacefulness, rural villages and plenty of opportunities for activities to enjoy both.

Begin your luxury twin-centre Morocco holiday with a stay in the beguiling city of Marrakech, also known as the ‘Red City’ after the colour of its ramparts, houses and monuments. The focal point of Marrakech is the celebrated square and marketplace, Jemaa el Fna, in the Medina quarter and your hotel, Four Seasons Resort Marrakech, is just a five-minute drive or easy walk away. Thronged day and night with a carnival of local life, Jemaa el Fna, is a patchwork of stacks of dried fruits and numerous stalls that sell freshly pressed orange juice to order, as well as colourful characters including snake charmers and traditionally-dressed water sellers, even monkeys, camels and donkeys. It’s a feast for the eyes with something fascinating to see everywhere you look. Towering over the scene is the stately Minaret de la Koutoubia, a reminder of the importance of Islam to the lives of the city’s residents. Of course, the labyrinth-style souk that is laid out in streets of leather goods, spices, fashion and so on, is the best place to start if you want to shop. Once you get past the more touristy shops on its perimeter, there is a real authentic experience to be had. In the heart of the souk you’ll find leather and metal workers turning materials into all manner of beautiful items, as well as wools and fabrics being dyed traditionally using fruits and vegetables in hot vats. Typical souvenirs include leather slippers, bags and wallets, decorative copper lanterns, pots and trays, jewellery and carpets. Other highlights include museums, the stunning gardens and former home of Yves St Laurent and a historic old boy’s boarding school. Meanwhile, the more European Modern District of Gueliz is full-to-bursting with nightclubs, big-brand stores and New World cuisine. Pre-booking a Guide is an excellent way to find your bearings and discover many intriguing places that may otherwise be hidden.

Four Seasons Resort Marrakech

Four Seasons Resort Marrakech is located in the city’s traditional Hivernage District, to the west of the famous Medina – which is a five-minute drive away, but can easily be walked to if you prefer. Set in forty acres of beautiful gardens dotted with olive trees, palms and cascading fountains, this Four Seasons resort offers guests wishing to enjoy the bustle of the city and explore the wider region, a resort-style oasis to return to. The Moorish-style, pink-coloured property, in some ways, echoes old Marrakech, yet the hotel's design is completely contemporary. Guests enjoy a round-the-clock concierge service and first-class facilities, while guest rooms and suites each have a balcony and are elegantly decorated in an understated Moroccan style. Guests staying in a suite may take advantage of the butler service that is available. Just next door are the 12th century Menara Gardens and in the distance are the majestic Atlas Mountains, that can be seen from many seats in the restaurants and suites at the hotel.

Leaving the city behind, head into the Atlas Mountain Range, that offers a peaceful contrast to the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. It’s a lush and varied area, with plenty of opportunities to take photos of dramatic scenery including the snow-capped mountains. You’ll see a more traditional way of life as you pass by or indeed visit picturesque Berber villages in the Asni Valley and rural markets where you can observe the bartering that goes on between locals. Your hotel, Kasbah Tamadot, is set amidst beautiful gardens and is the perfect place to relax and enjoy some traditional Moroccan food; you can even pre-book a Moroccan cooking class and learn the art of making local cuisine for yourself. A host of adventure activities to suit all levels of ability are available too. The mountains and their hidden gems can be discovered on foot, by 4x4 vehicle, on mountain bike, on horse-back or even on one of the hotel’s resident mules − with the assistance of a Guide. There are a host of areas to trek including the Ouirgane Valley, Tacheddirt Valley and Toubkal National Park. If you feel like a gentle stroll, why not pay a visit to Kasbah Tamadot’s Eco-Museum on the edge of the Toubkal National Park, where you can find out more about the area’s natural and cultural resources? It’s also possible to pre-book a game of golf, and there is even a ski resort, Oukaïmeden, in the high Atlas Mountains.

For a more intimate setting, stay in one of the luxurious Berber Tented Suites which boast luxury hot tubs.
