The focal point is the celebrated square and marketplace, Jemaa el Fna, which is thronged day and night with a carnival of local life. Towering over the scene is the stately Minaret de la Koutoubia, a reminder of the importance of Islam to the lives of the city’s residents. Within the ancient medina you’ll find palace buildings and bazaars filled with master craftsmen fashioning their tapestries, pottery and jewellery. Meanwhile, the more European Modern District of Gueliz is full-to-bursting with nightclubs, big-brand stores and New World cuisine.

Health facilities, hygiene and disease risks vary worldwide and you should take health advice about your specific needs as early as possible. We highly recommend that you seek specialist advice from your Doctor and, where recommended, obtain vaccinations or tablets for protection against, for example: Malaria, Hepatitis A, Polio and Typhoid. In some cases, treatments for Malaria should begin well in advance of travel. Travellers may also be required to show Yellow Fever Certificates on arrival in certain destinations ie, some African countries. Please note that you are strongly advised against scuba-diving for 24 hours before travelling by air. We would also like to draw your attention to the risk of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and recommend that you consult with your doctor before travelling.

Visa and Advance Passenger Information

All passengers must ensure they have valid, acceptable passport, any required visa and any other documentation for both the final destination and any stop-off points en route. Please make sure that Advance Passenger Information is submitted in advance to travel for all destinations. Failure to hold correct documentation or submitting incorrect details with Advance Passenger Information or Visa applications may result in refusal of carriage or entry into a country. Please check with the relevant Embassy regarding visa requirements well in advance of your travel date. Charges may apply for some visas.

Travelling With Children or Without an Adult

Children travelling without both parents should be aware that some countries require documentary evidence of parental responsibility before allowing lone parents to enter the country (for example, South Africa) or, in some cases, before permitting the children to leave the country. Please contact the relevant Embassy for the county you are travelling to for further information.

Jemaa el Fna, the main open space in Marrakech, is as old as the city itself. Find yourself amidst snake-charmers, scribes and herbalists. In the evenings, the square becomes a venue for al fresco eating and entertainment including troupes of costumed acrobats, storytellers, magician, and semi-mystical ‘gnawa’ musicians beating out repetitive rhythms. Admire Minaret de la Koutoubia that is attached to the mosque in the centre of Marrakech and towers over the medina thanks to a long-standing planning ordinance that forbids any other building in the old city to rise above the height of a palm tree. Visit the Ali Ben Youseef Medersa, a 16th-century Koran school where up to nine-hundred students would have lived and studied; it was lovingly restored in the 1990s. For a novel way to get around, you could hop into a horse-drawn calèche for a tour around the outside of the city walls; first constructed in the 12th century, these form a neat circuit of ten kilometres punctuated by about two-hundred towers and twenty gates a complete whirl around takes the best part of an hour.

At the heart of the medina, the Musée de Marrakech features rotating exhibits of Moroccan and Islamic arts and crafts, but the star attraction is actually the building itself.

The best place to head for whilst in Marrakech is the souk. It's laid out in labyrinth-style streets of fashion, leather slippers, spices, dried fruit, silver jewellery, copper and brassware, rugs and ceramics − and don't be too shy to barter!

Take a stroll through the Menara Gardens which are planted with olive trees, or visit the Majorelle Gardens created in the 1920s by the French Painter, Jacques Majorelle, that are arranged round a small Art Deco workshop and painted a bright blue.
