The Setai: Thali Platter at Jaya

As one of the hottest, trendiest cities in the United States, it’s a wonder anyone can keep up with Miami. This, however, is a challenge that does little to threaten South Beach legend, The Setai, which continues to push the limits of luxury with the opening of its brand new Asian-inspired restaurant, Jaya.
The latest culinary offering comes from a collaboration between Executive Chef, Mathias Gervais, who has served at several three Michelin star restaurants in Europe prior to his move to Miami, and Executive Sous Chef, Vijayudu Veena, who have joined together to create a selection of stand-out dishes incorporating flavours of Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, India, China and Japan. Incorporating traditional techniques, including wok stations and Tandoori ovens, the menu intends to invigorate the palate, with menu highlights including exciting offerings of Egg Steam and Pork Bun Bao, Thali Platter and Kimchi Fried Rice, alongside standing Setai favourites, such as Peking Duck, Tandoor sea bass and delicious Dim Sums. The new dishes are complemented by an exquisite selection of beverages, including Asian beers and sakes, as well as a fine range of wines from the hotel’s private cellar.
The opening of Jaya this year follows on from a string of successes and renovations at The Setai. Since the arrival of a new CEO in 2012, the glamorous hotel has unveiled an impressive multi-million dollar revitalisation to its pool deck and a new spa partnership with Parisian cosmetics brand, THÉMAÉ, followed by the debut of a number of brand-new Ocean Suites in 2014, offering stunning sea views and exclusive accommodation with enviable, bespoke services. Coinciding with celebrations of its tenth anniversary last year, The Setai also welcomed a new General Manager, Alex Furruer, and was awarded a prestigious Five Star rating from Forbes Travel Guide, further elevating its status as the place to be seen in the South Beach area.
The Asian appeal of Jaya restaurant blends in perfectly with the beautifully designed, Far Eastern style of the rest of the hotel, aimed to balance the sizzle of Miami with a sense of peaceful serenity.
The building started life as the famed Dempsey Vanderbilt Hotel, later to be crafted into The Setai we know and love today. Created with the Asian influence of the Art Deco movement in mind, the grey, antique bricks in the lobby were even transported from ruins in Shanghai, and, following the ten-year anniversary celebrations, Buddhist monks from the Wat Buddharangsi of Miami were invited to bless all entrances to the hotel. It must have worked – The Setai has continued to exceed expectations since.
