The stunning Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace was built between 1928 and 1943 for His Highness Maharaja Umaid Singhji, grandfather of the present Maharaja, to symbolise a new Jodhpur and give employment to the local people during a time of great drought and famine. Principle residence of the Jodhpur royal family, and one of the world's largest private residences, the imposing palace is a magnificent golden-hued sandstone monument set amidst twenty-six acres of verdant landscaped gardens, designed by the Edwardian architect, Henry Lanchester, who gained inspiration from eastern and western influences, with a dash of Art Deco thrown in to give (what was then) a contemporary twist. Guests are escorted to their accommodation by the Royal Butler, who will also be happy to offer a fascinating guided tour through the Palace's rich Art Deco interiors and gardens to see the billiard room, underground pool, marble squash courts, whispering gallery, croquet lawns, tennis courts and stables (guests can also visit the hotel's museum). Taj Umaid Bhawan Palace is a member of 'The Leading Hotels of the World'.
