City Life

Venice is a year-round stunner, come rain or shine, and is sure to impress even the most reluctant of romantics with its watery vistas, winding alleyways, elegant townhouses, bijou shops, marble churches and grand palaces. Allow yourself to be serenaded by a singing gondolier as you traverse the network of canals or hop on a vaporetto (water taxi) at dusk and watch the sunset. Dine in one of Venice's fabulous bars and restaurants, enjoy a large slice of wood-fired pizza with a beer, glass of wine or Campari beside the Grand Canal, or if you're feeling adventurous, seek out flavours such as sea snails and spider crabs. Of course, a delicious gelato or refreshing cup of coffee is perfect for a quick pit stop between sightseeing or shopping. Admire the mosaic-lined interiors of San Marco and marvel at the marble floors, domed ceilings and glass tiles depicting significant episodes in Italian history, or cross over the Bridge of Sighs. A short boat ride from St Mark's Square is the Venice Lido, a relaxing seaside resort fringed by a long sandy beach that has long been a haven for aristocracy, poets and writers, and today boasts one of Europe's most exclusive beaches. For a typical souvenir, venture to Murano Island, famed for its flamboyant and colourful Murano glassware - it was here that the glass-blowers of Venice were sent to centuries ago when they were deemed a fire hazard to the city.
